Is strength training safe and effective for women over 40?

Yes. For women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, progressive strength training is one of the most effective ways to protect muscle and bone through perimenopause and menopause. At Valdes Performance it is coached, capped small, and built on a written plan around your history and how you move, starting with a free movement assessment.

Why it matters now

Muscle and bone are use-it-or-lose-it

Adults lose muscle steadily after 30, and the drop in estrogen through perimenopause and menopause accelerates both muscle and bone loss. Strength training is the most direct way to push back. We write about what the research actually says, without the hype, in the Golden Hour journal: strength training through menopause, bone density and osteopenia, and getting back into fitness after 50.

How you would train

Coached, capped, and built around you

Most women start with Small Group Strength Training, capped at six people with a coach on the floor the whole session, or with Personal Training when they want one-on-one attention first. Every program is built from the same six foundational movement patterns and a written plan, and every membership includes the member-only Recovery Suite with a Sunlighten mPulse infrared sauna. See every way to train for the membership that fits.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Is strength training safe during perimenopause and menopause?

For most women it is not only safe, it is one of the highest-value things you can do in this stage. Muscle and bone both decline faster through the menopause transition, and progressive resistance training is what pushes back on both. We coach the load so it is hard enough to matter and controlled enough to be safe, and every start begins with a movement assessment.

I have never lifted weights. Can I start in my 50s or 60s?

Yes, and many of our members did exactly that. You start with a free consultation and a movement assessment, then a written plan that meets you where you are. You are never handed a barbell and left to figure it out.

Is Valdes Performance a women-only gym?

No. Most of our members are women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s and the coaching is built around that, but men, younger women, and young athletes train here too. What everyone shares is coached, progressive strength rather than a crowded class.

How is this different from a bootcamp or a big-box gym?

Small Group Strength Training is capped at six people with a coach on the floor the entire session, working from a written, progressive plan built on six foundational movement patterns. It is strength training, not a high-intensity cardio class, and recovery is part of the membership rather than a separate storefront.
